A New Approach
– The Servant Leader

The work place was already changing fast and new approaches and attitudes were already needed, but in these post pandemic days a new type of manager and leader is most definitely required. This new breed appreciates that at the heart of success will be things like care, engagement, quality communication, and empowerment.

The world has changed and it’s not changing back – and a new, more holistic, caring and people centric way of running a team is essential. In brief, this new type of Manager & Leader needs to embrace the ‘Servant Leader’ ethos.

So just what is a Servant Leader?

Fundamentally it is about being a Supervisor, Team Leader, Manager or Boss who understands that displaying care, empathy, support and understanding is the most effective way to lead and manage – and as the world recovers from the horrors of Covid – surely this ‘team centric’ and ‘people centric’ approach has never been needed more.

But where did the concept and philosophy of the Servant Leader come from?

Well, it has actually been around a while and it is in fact nothing new. It’s a description that first appeared back in 1970 in an essay by Robert K Greenleaf, although Servant Leaders existed long before the technical description was penned.

In brief a Servant Leader style of Manager of Supervisor embraces the following:

  • Encourage openness and so develops trust
  • Encourage free thinking and ideas from the team
  • Display an attitude that is not about ‘them’ – but is about the team
  • Develops accountability in the team, and so ownership
  • Are there for the team… are there to help
  • Ensures the team are fully trained
  • Makes decisions that consider the impact on the team

Servant Leaders Display:

  • Empathy
  • Understanding
  • Emotional Intelligence
  • Listening Skills
  • Care
  • Support
  • Inclusiveness

Even prior to Covid, anxiety and stress in the workplace was extremely common. Sadder still is the fact that most of this stress was caused not by team members struggling with their work, but more struggling with a manager of boss who simply did not know how to manage them correctly.

So perhaps now, more than ever before, managers and leaders need to adopt an approach that has empathy, support, understanding and care at its heart, an approach that can best be summarised by the following:

The Leaders Pledge

“I Am There To Serve The People Who Work For Me”

Here at Brilliant Training we love the Leaders Pledge. Yes, adopting such an approach does tend to turn on its head the outdated ideas of just what a manager and a boss is, but we feel it’s a concept and a way of leading people that is sourly needed right now! In addition, it’s an approach that definitely works!
